Visitors to the garden

One of our newest gardeners told me that a black snake was found caught in the netting surrounding one of the beds the previous day. They tried to save it (as these are good snakes that eat rodents). However, it was too entangled and irritated.

Just be on the lookout if you are walking through the tall grass…

Crop update – Some beauties…some bugs

The Squash bugs are breeding! Today I spied eggs on the leaves of a plant at #15. I have also seen the nymph’s and a few adults in my bed (#20), but there were more than a dozen at #15.

Here is a page from Walter Reeve’s site with Identification and treatment advice.

Visit the new Facebook Page!

I am in the process of setting up a page for the garden on Facebook.

There are a ton of resources there, and everyone can post and link, and show photos there as well, now.

Be a kind neighbor

While at the garden, if you notice a particularly dry looking garden near yours, why not give it a drink too while you’re at it!

Has anyone circled their calendar with harvest dates?  If your kids are participating, this may be one way to help them ‘count the days’…

Frost damage?

I was duly warned, but left my babies out and unprotected Wednesday night and Thursday. Did you escape the ‘almost’ freeze this past week?

Sometimes we don’t discover the damage for several weeks.  I have more cantaloupe seeds, so I can start again with those – they were crispy critters after the freezing temps, and I have concerns about my cucumbers.

If you need seeds, let me know, I have some extras, flowers and veggies. I am also starting some in pots here at the house that I will transplanting later.

Compost Materials WANTED

Please bring your old newspaper, paper bags, egg shells, coffee grounds and veggie and fruit scraps to the compost pile anytime. This will be a source of dirt for us when it is time to start the next crops!

Thanks!

Taking Shape!

Today when I arrived to plant my spots (19 & 20), I discovered almost all the beds have been planted, and we have some very creative gardeners.

I’m a bit sunburnt (gotta remember that lotion next time!), but now in the ground are tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, eggplant, beans, cucumber, squash, sweet potatoes, onions, basil.

I was delighted to find my seeds had taken off: spinach, basil, onion and nasturtium. I am going to add some radish and possibly leeks. I see severa

l folks are trying seeds. Let me know what variety you have and how you are succeeding!

Garden Planner

A friend recently sent me this link to a seed and plant company he has used with good success. I visited the site and they have a FREE Garden Planner (30 day trial). It is a good way to start and ensure that you have success.

Some plants don’t like certain neighbors :-) Starting out, we don’t know all these nuances, and therefore make simple mistakes that may inhibit our success. Using a Garden Planner such as this will help you avoid these errors and ensure a bumper crop.

Also, crop rotation is important. Here we can easily get two full growing seasons from our weather. Be sure to have a look at the guide for rotating what you plant where.

Have a look:

Garden is Blessed

Reverend Keith Blesses the Community Garden

Let the planting begin!

A great turnout for the Garden Party and Easter Egg event on Saturday. Kids gathered eggs with candy surprises, people bought plants and baked goods and everyone enjoyed the music provided by our musicians Steve and John.

The last of the beds has been leased for the season. Please use this site for information that will help you have a successful garden. Also sharing with your fellow gardeners any tips on great varieties, when you spy new critters (good or bad!) in the garden, or if you want to share your bounty of seeds/plants/harvest.

Thanks to everyone who made Saturday’s event such a success!
